Tutor

Courses are run by Fi Kilpatrick and her assistant Lucy Rodgers.

Having studied Mural Design at Chelsea School of Art, Fi specialised in stained glass and set up a glass studio in Portobello in 1988, designing and making glass panels to commission. After extensive travels, she finally settled in west Cornwall, where she works from her studio/gallery and teaches glass & mosaic throughout the West Country. Fi has studied under Mark Angus, Alison Kinnaird, Gayle Mathias and Detlef Tanz.

Course Size

Courses are run with a maximum of four students, giving each student the full attention they need.

Timetable

Each course comprises two days starting at 10.00 am and ending at 4.30 pm with breaks for tea or coffee and a short break for lunch.

Accommodation

There is plenty of B&B and pub accommodation locally. Please click on the links on the website for information.

Cost

The cost for the two day course is £175 and a non-refundable deposit of £100 will secure your place.

All materials – glass, paper, drawing tools etc are provided and included in the cost but hand tools, soldering irons and other studio equipment are provided on loan. Tools and extra glass etc will be available to purchase from the studio during the course if necessary. You are welcome to bring your own tools with you if you have them.

Course outline

This intensive weekend course will outline the techniques involved in making leaded glass windows, showing the many different types and colours of glass available and highlighting the techniques used to achieve different effects. The emphasis will be on practical work, with lots of demonstrations, with each student completing their panel by the end of the weekend. The course is for mixed abilities, as I find all students learn so much from each other. Above all, the course will be FUN!

Your day will start at 10.00 a.m. on Saturday at the artglass-uk studio/gallery, with an introduction to stained glass – a potted history and an explanation of basic design factors to consider when working with glass, followed by a brief demonstration of all the techniques we will be using.

We will then practice cutting glass (not nearly as scary as it sounds..!) and discuss designs. Given the time constraints of the weekend, beginners will be given a choice of designs to follow (up to 15” x 15”), choosing their glass from a large selection in the studio. Advanced students will bring their own designs, which will be discussed with the class. We will then explore colour and texture in glass and determine the size of the panel to be made by each student.

By the end of the first day you should have completed all the glass cutting.

The next day we will assemble the panel using H-section lead came, solder the lead joints and finally cement and clean the panel.
